What Does An Endometrial Biopsy Evaluate?

default
Posted on Fri, 19 Dec 2014
Question: I did have a vaginal and pelvic ultrasound yesterday and am waiting and might add anxious about the results. I have not had any discharge for quite awhile now but am just worried that the thickness of the lining may have increased. I did have a tad of blood after the procedure but, I must admit the technician was very aggressive!! I have had 2 previous vaginal ultrasounds and no discomfort. This one was very uncomfortable along with cramping. If the thickness has increased what would be the next step since I am not having discharge and the biopsy came back negative??

Brief Answer:
Lets see the result.

Detailed Answer:
Hi madam,

No need of such anxiety. Just be relaxed.
Lets see the USG report. In the gynecologic evaluation, biopsy is the gold stand investigation and if negative (the recent one), no need of any worry even if the endometrial thickness is in the borderline on USG.

Actually we order for endometrial biopsy when a patient comes with postmenopausal bleeding and USG suggests increased endometrial thickness. In such case, we order for a pap smear and fractional curettage. If both these comes as normal, there is nothing to worry.

If the biopsy report is normal, the endometrial thickness also is likely to be normal. Otherwise, especially if the echogenicity and other features suggest, you may be asked for a repeat biopsy.
Your doctor will discuss these issues in detail with you.

Hope you got cleared.
Wishing you good health.
Thank you.
