What Does MRI Showing Lesion In Calf Muscle Indicate?

default
Posted on Wed, 28 Oct 2015
Question: My 30 year old son had surgery to remove schwannomas in his foot (he previously had a large one removed from his ulnar nerve, as well). The preceding MRI revealed a "lesion" in his calf muscle. The surgeon explained it as a void or hole in the muscle, and said there was nothing to do about it. My son's online research indicated he should rest it, but he can't rest all the time, and it has been over a year. He has found that mild exercise, or much use at all, causes pain in the area of the lesion. Should we pursue more treatment? Could the presence of the lesion be related to the schwannomas in some way--caused by a similar root cause, perhaps? He doesn't have insurance or employment, and he lives with us.

Brief Answer:
The lesion should be removed.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

Lesion seen in the MRI can not be empty space/hole in the calf muscle. The image of the lesion and the image of hole is much different so the radiologist can not mistake them.
Moreover, holes in the muscle does not hurt. So there must be some lump in the calf muscle. Resting is not a solution for sure. It has to be removed and tested. No doubt in that.
As he has some genetic aptitude to Shwannomas, the lump can be associated with it.

So I suggest him to consult general surgeon or orthopedist and consider treatment (waiting is not a solution).

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.
