What Do Ulcers On Penile Shaft Indicate?

default
Posted on Tue, 24 Feb 2015
Question: Hello Doctor. I had unprotected intercourse with a long term partner 15 days ago and realized that I had caught some kind of infection a couple of days later with 3 white ulcers on the penile shaft with some foul smelling discharge and acutely painful. I consulted a Urologist on the 6th day from exposure and was prescribed blood tests such as TLC, ESR and VDRL and the VDRL test came as Non Reactive. The other blood tests were also found to be normal. The doctor prescribed Signoflem for 5 days and Gudcef-L for 10 days besides the use of T-Bact ointment locally twice every day.
I have followed all the instructions from the doctor and even though today is the penultimate day for the antibiotics course completion, there hasn't been a drastic improvement in the condition even though the foul discharge stopped and the pain has subsided considerably. The ulcers still remain and I am continuing to apply T-Bact twice everyday. Please suggest what I should do next. Should I consult a different doctor either specialising in internal medicine or dermatology or visit the urologist once again for further advice.

Brief Answer:
Your treatment is correct continue it.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your query at HCM
I understand your concern well.

The ulcer you are having could be fungal or bacterial infection. Your are taking cefpodoxime which is antibiotic, mupirocin which is also antibiotic and analgesic. You are taking right treatment. Don t worry it will start to heal in few days. If not and discharge comes, you can get sample from discharge or ulcer collected and send for gram staining microscopy examination and culture for aerobic and anaerobic bacteria also fungal culture done. It is possible that VDRL TEST comes negative early so you must get it repeated with HIV PCR as your sexual intercourse was unprotected.
If your symptoms deteriorate you can visit dermatologist or urologist.

Hope I answered your query.
Take care
