What Do These Following Lab Reports Indicate?

default
Posted on Mon, 23 Nov 2015
Question: I am currently undergoing tests for joint pain, swelling hands, ankles, feet, night sweats, fatigue. My lab results are c4 complement 7, ANA negative, ds DNA positive, immunofixation serum test - IGG lambda monoclonal protein present, globulin 4.9, protein 8.5. The rheumatologist said she believes I have lupus or vasculitis, but that was prior to the IGG lambda showing present. Is the IGG lambda associated with lupus? I've read it means a diagnosis of multiple myeloma. Does this mean I have multiple myeloma?

Brief Answer:
MGUS or Multiple myeloma

Detailed Answer:
Hi there.

Welcome to Healthcare Magic.

Thanks for the query.

Usually Anti ds DNA positive antibodies goes on favour of Lupus.

Plasma cells in your blood usually produce immunoglobulin like IgG, IgM etc.

Cancer of the plasma cells cause Multiple myeloma which can cause increased IgG lambda but also non serious causes like MGUS or Monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance where a certain antibody is produced more hasn't been proved to be cancer yet.

I would advise you to do blood test for M protein by Electrophoresis. If M band is present in the Electrophoresis then you could have Multiple myeloma. Also if your urine is positive for Bence XXXXXXX proteins in a 24 hour sample, you could have Multiple myeloma.

If brother your M protein nor Bence XXXXXXX protein are present in the blood and urine respectively then you could be having MGUS. A bone marrow biopsy could confirm this.

Kindly discuss about these options with your Doctor.

I hope I have answered your query.

I will be available to answer your follow up queries.

Dr. Aashish Raghu
