Brief Answer:
Glucose control

Detailed Answer:
I understand your concerns over hyperglycemia.

A bedtime glucose of 126 is reasonably good. I agree 190 upon awakening, and the other 216 yesterday are high. However they are not alarming by themselves.
When glucoses run high in such a range for a number of years that is when long term diabetes complications set in.
In the short term ie over the course of few days if they are hovering around 200 they generally do not cause any major complications. Unless of course, they worsen and progress to more severe hyperglycemia which can be dangerous.

Metformin is an excellent choice of medications when used judiciously and in optimal doses. Check with your endocrinologist to consider increasing the dose gradually based upon how well you tolerate it and also going by the response of glucoses control.

If maximally tolerated doses of metformin do not bring glucoses to goal then additional medication may be necessary.

Moreover, your endocrinologist is the best person to judge whether it is safe to use metformin in your circumstance. For example (s)he will assess your kidney, liver, heart and lung function to ensure it is all right to use.
Such an evaluation will require an in person examination and some blood tests.
