What Do Red Pimples On The Scrotum Of A Child Indicate?

default
Posted on Tue, 21 Jun 2016
Question: My 9 year old son came up with red pimples on his scrotum about 10 days ago. 7 days ago we visited the doctor and he thought they were school sores and prescribed antibiotics. There has not been any improvement at all with antibiotics instead , there was spread of red pimples/pumps over the two thighs on the side since then. We continued the antibiotics and we have 2 days left but the increase in these has convinced me it is not school sores... Impetigo?? I think it is called. They are not painful and he only seems to want to scratch them before he goes to bed, they are quite itchy then. We keep the area clean, change underwear every day, but I am a bit tired that it has not improved.
I actually visited the same doctor 3 days ago and he said it may be a viral rash and it may not be impetigo but to continue the antibiotics just in case.
I would appreciate an advice as to what it could be, 2-3 possibilities, and how long I can expect it to last dependent on the diagnosis. Thank you, EP

Brief Answer:
Scabies

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for the query.
Probably he has developed scabies or a fungal infection.
Your description matches with that.
If possible upload a photograph of the involved area.
This will help me in giving a closer diagnosis.
Waiting for your response.
Thank you.

Thank you for your prompt and helpful response. I have already uploaded one photo now that I have access to, but I will try and get a better one in a few hours.
Scabies seems to have the symptoms my son has. This means another doctor visit?? How does it get treated and how long Will it take to be treated? I think his sibling has started complaining too, so I am worried he got infected too.
Many thanks,
doctor

Brief Answer:
Use prrmethrin

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for the photograph.
Yes it is scabies.
You might not require to visit a doctor.
It can be easily treated with the use of prrmethrin cream.
Apply 5 % permethrin cream below neck on whole body let it be there overnight.
In morning give a good bath wash all the clothes used in hot water.
This medicine is very safe and effective and usually available over the counter.
A single application is enough.
You must treat both kids.
For itch give an antihistamine syrup.
Let me know if you have any other doubts.
Thank you.

I just uploaded a new photo which represents what he now has.the previous photo had scratched marks and now he has spread with more spots with white tops.
I don't know how clear the photo is.
I visited the doctor again but i am morw convinced now that it is molluscum.i wouldn't mind getting a second opinion.
It has spread on his legs and thighs and more on the scrotum and a couple on the chest.
He is not itchy all The time just occasionally.what is the period he is expected to have it for??
I'M told there is nothing to treat them with but wait. IS he ok to swim or play sport.thank you in advance. EP.

Brief Answer:
Not molluscum

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for the follow up.
It is not molluscum.
Molluscum contagiosum doesn't spread so fast and it is asymptomatic.
Still it looks like scabies.
You can try permethrin.
It's better to avoid swimming as scabies is communicable.
Let me know if you have any other doubts.
Thank you
