Question: If I have negative ANA, normal C reactive & normal sedimentary blood tests could I still have rheumetoid arthritis?

Hi,

Thank you for your query. I can understand your concerns.

Anti-nuclear antibody(ANA) is positive only in 20 to 50 % cases of Rheumetoid arthritis.
Acute phase proteins (C-reactive protein ) and ESR (erythrocyte sedimentation rate) may be normal during remission period.
None of these factors like ANA,C-reactive protein or ESR is included in the criteria for the diagnosis of Rheumetoid arthritis.

Rheumetoid arthritis:
Early symtoms are non-specific:Fatigue,Weakness,Vague arthralgias,Myalgias,     Weight loss,parasthesia,Joint stiffness,Poor appetite.
Subsequent symptoms are :
Morning stiffness (more than one hour ). Movements are restricted especially in the morning.
Articular involvement-onset insidious-chronic symmetrical polyarthritis.
Arthritis involving three or more joint areas .
The joints most commonly involved are:
Any diarthrodial joint may be inflamed. Joints involved are painful,swollen and warm.Classic lesions are in small joints of the hands and feet(MCP,MTP,&PIP joints).
In long standing cases non-articular manifestations of rheumatoid arthritis involves various systems including respiratory,cardiovascular,hematological etc.
