What Do My Pap Smear Cytology And DNA Test Results Indicate?

default
Posted on Mon, 19 Jan 2015
Question: Hello, I have 2 reports for pap smear cytology, DNA detector and mrna e6/e7 - but I am having problem interpreting properly. I can't go to doctor before Monday, so I need urgent opinion based on the reports.

Hello Sir, I am husband of XXXX. My Wife is 21 years old now. I already took a pap cytology and DNA test. The sample was taken from her vagina by myself, I did this after reading the instruction on the test kit which I received from "Quest Lab" and watched few videos in youtbe also. I know this is weird, but I wasn't able to find any gynecologist who can take the sample, so I had to do it myself. I don't know if the sample taken correctly and therefore having any effect in the test result. However, the test report came out already and I am attaching the report here for your opinion. Kindly suggest me what to do next.

Brief Answer:
Both reports are normal..

Detailed Answer:
hello,
Thanks for contacting healthcaremagic.

Both the reports are normal.
Hpv rna report is negative for 16,14,45 strains. Thats good indicating that she doesn't have a hpv infection.
Liquid based cytology also shows normal pap smear with normal cervical cytology without any intraepithelial lesion or any form of cervical malignancy or cancer. the squamous cells seen are normal and a transformation zone seen indicating healthy cervix without any atypical cells or hyperplasia.
According to the report you have done a good job in taking the sample.:)

Hello Doctor, thank you very much ! But BOTH the reports have 'DETECTED' mentioned in BOLD lettering. I am bit confused here doc, can you please have a look at the screenshots below ?

Mrna E6/E7: http://i.imgur.com/ca9ml0v.png

Can you please check once more both the reports ? I know I am being paranoid, but please bear with me.

Best regards

Brief Answer:
explained..in detail.

Detailed Answer:
hello,
I have gone through it again.
yes it says detected that one of the 14 serotypes are present which is normal as hpv is present in all but in lower levels , hence HPV mRNA test is positive, but the known serotypes 16,18 and 45 which are known to cause cervical cancer are absent. So no cause to worry.
Other serotypes which are detected by assay, their manifestation can be in form of warts and other skin manifestations but the ones which we in general are more concerned , the ones causing cervical cancer are absent . the pap smear also supports the same.
so there is no cervical cell aplasia which is a good result.
You should as written follow up with regular yearly pap smears for her to rule out any increase in levels of high risk hpv strains. There are for your info around 100 different strains of hpv and the assay shows positivity even if one is present ( any of the 14 which it tests).
so the result is to be concentrated on hpv 6/18 & 45 only which is negative.

i hope i have been able to explain you in detail.
regards.
you may close the query if no further questions.
