What Do My Liver Function Test Reports Indicate?
Question: Hello, recently I had bloodwork done and liver enzymes were very high. 700+ and 300+ alt and ast. A week later I was retested amd they were 300+ and 100+. Another test done resulted in even lower numbers. My concern is if there was damage done and why this happened in the first place. I was taking herbal supplements at the time and my doctor thinks it was the cause due to nutmeg in particular. I stopped all supplements but am very scared. 3 weeks have gone by and they are still not in normal range. Was tested for hepatitis and all tests were negative.

Liver has a unique capability of regeneration. Its tissue regenerates. So in most cases patients of hepatitis becomes healthy again with no residual infection. It is possible that earlier you were having Acute Viral Hepatitis but later on after the virus completed its cycle your infection has resolved and tests for hepatitis are now -ve. Your liver parenchyma will regenerate to its original level. You just need to keep well hydrated and take adequate rest.
