What Do Dry Patches On Skin Of An Infant Indicate?
Question: My 8 month old son has dry patches on his skin. Initially i thought its just dry skin because of winter. But they started getting darker and are spreading. Please let me know if i should be worried and consult a paedetrician.

Hi...by what you quote this seems to be an eczema, a sort of allergy of the skin to me. As a matter of fact even my kid had this when young. The trick of the management is keeping the skin moist and never allowing it to be dry. For this oil massage and lotions like Oilatum will help. Regarding cure options - eczema is a sort of allergy...allergies can only be controlled and can never be cured. But usually kids grow out of it...that is as the age progresses, they become better starting from 6 months.

As I have mentioned earlier it is an allergic reaction of the skin and will definitely get better as the age progresses. Meanwhile try keeping the skin to be moist with moisturizing lotions.
If the activity of the kid/ his feeding habits / urination and stools are normal you need not worry. Irritability could be there due to the itchy sensation which an infant cannot express out or scratch.
