Brief Answer:
Most likely diagnosis is internal hemorrhoids. IBD, IBS needs to be ruled out

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to healthcaremagic.

I appreciate your concern.

Based on your description, the most likely cause is Internal hemorrhoids. The brown mucus like discharge can be due to a number of causes including Inflammatory bowel disease, Irritable bowel syndrome, constipation leading to erosion of the mucosa lining the lower gastrointestinal tract. Internal hemorrhoids mostly present with bleeding and a brownish mucus , external hemorrhoids are painful and itchy and can bleed , too. Bleeding or brownish discharge during bowel movements is a common sign of hemorrhoids. IBS ( Irritable Bowel Syndrome) is mainly a pain syndrome and a chronic condition that does not present acutely. Though IBS can be associated with either diarrhea or constipation as well as increased mucus production. The acute onset can also be due to gastroenteritis / infectious diarrhea which is associated with blood in stool, brownish mucus, fever and dehydration.A physical exam and digital rectal exam to look for hemorrhoids, anal fissure etc should be done in consult with a general surgeon. Stool for occult blood, stool for ova and parasite should also be done. Colonoscopy can be advised if inflammatory bowel disease is suspected, in consult with your doctor. Treatment, would depend on the cause. In the meanwhile , you should avoid spicy food or other food items like caffeine that may irritate your gut. Keep yourself well hydrated by taking at least 6 glasses (250 ml) of water daily. If the diarrhea progresses then osmotic fluids like "ORS" can be advised to prevent dehydration.

Please consult your doctor before deciding on any further course of action.
Sincerely wishing you a healthy life.
Thank you.

This seems to happen everytime i get my period could this be a factor in why I am having problems. I know with my last fibroid it was so big it was affecting my bladder to the point I would have to go to the bathroom every 20 mins it felt like.

Brief Answer:
Unlikely to be associated with fibroids

Detailed Answer:
hello again,

It is unlikely that the uterine fibroids are responsible for the brown mucus. The occurrence during the periods indicates a flare in inflammation. A DRE ( Digital rectum exam ) and anoscopy can be done by a general surgeon to look for local causes that are commonly associated with these symptoms. Again, I would say that if there is no such cause found, a sigmoidoscopy or preferably a colonoscopy can be advised to rule out IBD ( Inflammatory bowel disease ).

Let me know if you have any query

Thanks
