What Causes Weight Loss While On Thyronorm?

default
Posted on Thu, 20 Aug 2015
Question: I was taking 100 mch thyronorm and my TSH level was around 3. But erroneously I took 200 mcg for about a month. My TSH level is now 0.005 and my doc asked me to rdduce it to 88 mcg. Actually I was not aware of my mistake when I went to her with my problem of weight loss of 3 kg in 2 monts, breathlessness etc. Now I am hesitant to tell her of my mistake. What should I do now ? Should I continue 88 mcg ... I want to gain weight .I am 54 years old 5' 6" tall and now my weight is only 56 kgs.

Brief Answer:
Continue taking the prescribed medicine.

Detailed Answer:
Hi & Welcome to HCM.
I appreciate your concern for the weight loss which has apparently occurred due to intake of larger doses of Thyronorm.

As per the XXXXXXX Association of Clinical Endocrinologists patients with hypothyroidism should keep their TSH level between 0.45 and 4.12 mIU/L while taking Thyronorm.

The larger doses of Thyrornom are apparently responsible for significant weight loss, breathlessness, palpitation, sweating etc.

Now, since your treating doctor has adjusted the dose, continue taking the prescribed dose, in due course of time your weight loss will be reduced and you will start gaining weight along with improvements in other symptoms.

Hope to have answered your query.

Regards.

Thank you for your reply which was reassuring.I made a typing mistake in my age .It is 64..Do you think I should stop Thyronorm for a few days.My cousin a child specialist says the 88 mcg dose is high it should be lesser say 50.mcg.What do you feel Doctor?.Even one kg loss makes a lot of difference to me...how soon will I be normal ? I hope I don't sound childish...My hair is also falling now.breathlessness has reduced.Did not take thyronorm for last two days when I realised my mistake.

Brief Answer:
Kindly check the details

Detailed Answer:
Dear Sir,
Thanks for your kind reply.

As per the data given (height, weight and age) and if you do not have any heart disease the calculated dose of Thyornorm is up to 50 microgram/day.
And the TSH level should be repeated after 6-8 weeks to check the response and its range.

Kindly consult your treating doctor to review the required dosage of Thyronorm.
It may take a few weeks to restore the normal hormonal pattern.

Hope to have answered your query.
