What Causes Watery And Sticky Eyes In Infants?
My son XXXXXXX born on 06.02.2015 (normal delivery) has watery/sticky eyes which make him difficult to open his eyes since he was born. Got it cleaned with cotton and saline/warm water but it appears again after every half/1 hr. On 12.02.2015 (after 6 days of birth), went for check up which the Dr told us will be ok soon. Since that evening, he has sticky yellow discharge that needs to be cleaned after every half or 1 hr . On 14.02.2015, got him check up with an eye specialist who told us that the baby has got eye infection based on the mother's dirty/smelly discharge before birth. Dr prescribed: 1) Moxigram eye drop, 2) Optithrocin ointment and 3) INCLAV BID (Amoxicillin and Potassium Clavulanate Oral Suspension IP). We have tried the first two prescription and his condition is improving.
My question is: Is it ok to give antibiotic (prescription 3 above) to a newborn 8 days old? Please help.
Newborn opthalmic infectoin - avoid oral antibiotics
Detailed Answer:
Hi...I whet through your query in detail.
This is an ophthalmic or eye infection and is quite common in some newborn babies. the ophthalmologist was right in the sense the mother's dirty/smelly discharge before birth - cold be a reason for this.
I suggest the follwoing - Continue Moxigram eye drops and Optithrocin ointment.
STOP - INCLAV BID (Amoxicillin and Potassium Clavulanate Oral Suspension IP) as oral antibiotics as high as this are not indicated.
