What Causes Upper Back Pain?

Question: A friend said I should ask for a chest X-ray because my upper back is uncomfortable a lot of the time, and I sometimes cough not a cold. How can you tell if back pain is osteoporosis or lung related?

Upper back pain is highly unlikely due to lung pathology. Rarely it may be caused by upper lobe pneumonia.
Other possibilities may be due to Osteoporosis or Osteoarthritis of the cervical or thoracic spine.
You should get Xrays of Chest and Cervical and Thoracic spine for a better insight in to the problem.
Also get a local physical and clinical examination by a local physician.
