What Causes Upper Abdominal Pain Despite Having Normal Ultrasound?

default
Posted on Wed, 15 Jun 2016
Question: I have cirrhosis of the liver even though I have never drank alcohol in my life. I am on the liver transplant list through XXXXXXX Ford in XXXXXXX buy my MELD score is only 12. Last week I had my second TIPS revision and now am experiencing sharp, tearing pain in the upper abdomen on the right side. Two days ago I went to our local ER and they did both an ultrasound and a CT Scan of my abdomen and did not find anything except some minor swelling in my lower intestines. Do you possibly have any idea what tests should be done now or what this may be? On scale of 1 to 10 pain, if I move just right it gets to be about a 7 or 8. Also, I have had the TIPS in my liver for about a year and a half and also about every 4 weeks or so I go down to XXXXXXX Ford for an EGD and to have varicies banded. Have had a total of 23 banded in about one and a half years. Please let me know.

Brief Answer:
Fibroscan of the liver/Upper GI endoscopy ultrasound

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

I attempt to answer this question as it is been long and very unusual on this forum. Do you have ascites as well, fluid filled abdomen?
I think you need fibroscan or Endoscopic ultrasound performed by a qualified Endoscopist. It reveals more details than transabdominal. If these are not available I would bet on MRI of the abdomen with emphasis on Liver, gall bladder.
These kind of queries need insights from a Gastroenterologist but you had chosen a GP / primary care doctor to answer.

Hope this helps you.
