What Causes Unintentional Weight Loss?

default
Posted on Thu, 5 Jan 2017
Question: My husband 77, has been loosing weight (22 lbs) over the past year. The doctor didn't notice is till we brought it to his attention and he didn't know why. He had a ultra sound of his stomach and that didn't show anything. He told him to drink more milk shake and see him in 2 months. Obviously that isn't an answer. We are changing doctors but it takes time.
He takes Norco for pain and has for 25 years. He has Tyroid issues, neuropothy, etc. He does take many drugs and has for years. He complains of his stomach. His mental statis is unclear and probably dementia or ALZ. He has had all blood work and chest extra and all is good there.
Any ideas?

Brief Answer:
Seems to be drugs related.

Detailed Answer:
Welcome To HCM. I am Dr Anshul Varshney. I understand your concern.

Unintended weight loss with all blood work up normal signifies that probably his weight loss is because of any of the drugs he is taking.

Narco can cause weight loss. I have seen many patients loosing weight on Norco.
On stopping the drug weight is gained back.

However important at this age is to rule out any other pathological causes.

I would recommend to get his Hemoglobin, Thyroid , blood sugar , stool for occult blood tests.

If all normal , probably drug is the reason.
I hope it helps you.
If you have any further query, please ask me.
