Question: Hi,
I have been having pins and needles type of pain in both hands. At night, it wakes me up. Some mornings, I also have pain on the inside of my elbow. I am a 61 year old woman who owns a restaurant. So I am on my feet at least 10-12 hours each day and lifting heavy pots and crates.

Brief Answer:
peripheral neuropathy

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Pins and needles are usually related to problems with the nerves in the area. It is called neuropathy. In this case peripheral neuropathy would be used since it does not involves nerves in the brain or spinal cord.

There are different causes but with a history of pain at the elbow and lifting heavy objects, trauma to the nerves is the most likely cause for you. Trauma includes arthritis or compression of the nerves from any source.

Other causes would be vitamin b12 or folate deficiency, diabetes, liver or kidney disease, medication side effect, stroke, ms, infection eg shingles.

Since the sensations wake you up at night, carpal tunnel syndrome where the nerves are compressed at the wrist, may need to be considered.

Your doctor can determine if this is the case by your history and examination of the hands.
Imaging of the elbows may also be considered.

Treatment of carpal tunnel includes: (a) rest if possible
(b)pain medication, you tried ibuprofen. Can consider cataflam or naproxen
(c)wrist splints
(d)injection
(e)surgery if no improvement- this is to reduce the pressure on the nerves

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions

I had a feeling that those were all possibilities. I do have arthritis and carpal tunnel could also be the culprit. Thanks for your response. I will try to get into the doctor this week to investigate it further and hopefully, get some relief.
I appreciate your quick response and concise answer.
