What Causes Tenderness And Swelling In The Leg After Injury?

default
Posted on Wed, 26 Apr 2017
Question: hello I fell on the stairs Friday night, I was not able to get up on my own, could not walk on my left leg. swelling occurred immediately and so did tenderness. it is now Tuesday and I am still having trouble walking, because there is shooting down my left leg, and pain in my knee. my lower left back is still very tender and swollen, bruised. I used the bathroom yesterday for the first time since the accident and my poop was pinkish red. and now today its the same thing. I am worried there might be something internally wrong.

Brief Answer:
Take a painkiller regularly to help decrease the inflammation.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thank you for using Healthcaremagic to post your health query.
I read carefully your question and I understand your concern.

It is normal to have some pains after a fall from the stairs. The bruises will need around 3 weeks to go away.

Meanwhile, take a painkiller to relieve the pain. I generally recommend Ibuprofen 400mg, 1 tablet 3 times/day after food for next 3-4 days. It will help with the leg and the back pain. It is good that you are using ice/heat and that are trying to not overuse the leg by using a cane.

Second thing to keep in mind is if you are able to bear any weight at all on your foot/leg. It is normal to have pain after such incident, but not being able to bear weight would indicate a fracture which requires X-rays of the affected region and a visit to your Orthopedician for the needed treatment (surgery or cast immobilization).

Thirdly, the stool problem- it may not be associated to this problem if is alone as a symptom. But if you have had abdominal pain which is getting worse, loss of appetite, pain while touching your abdomen, etc., then it may be something worrisome. If worse or not better, I would recommend seeing your doctor.

Hope this is helpful.
