What Causes Swelling Of Upper Lip After Having Accutane?

default
Posted on Mon, 8 Jun 2015
Question: my son is on accutane (in about the 3rd month, and 2 weeks ago was increased to higher dosage) and this evening for no known reason his top lip swelled up like a duck lip. I just gave him a benedryl and he is icing it. could this be a reaction to the accutane? Is this something that needs emergency attention?? He has no other symptoms other than the swollen lip.

Brief Answer:
please visit the ER -If the symptoms are persisting

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for using HCM.

Can understand your problem.

As accutane (isotretinion) should be used very carefully, only with real indication.

Exposure to sunlight,uv radiation, vitamin A supplements, many drugs like (phenytoin, tetracycline, steroids ), sometimes interaction with sea foods are the some factors(as it has many more side-effects & contra-indications) to be taken care of during accutane treatment.

I wanted some more details : has he been on any other medications, any insect bite, fever, headache, any intake of seafoods or excessive vitamin A containing foods from past 2-3 days? which can be related with accutane intake or increased dosage.

It can also be any other allergic reaction also.

He needs careful examination, observing for any other rash, breathlessness, cough, fever, restlessness, blurring of vision & urinary output.

If the lipswelling is progressive, i would suggest you to take him to the ER or at least keep the treating doctor informed about the problem.

Icing as well as antihistaminics (OTC) like cetrizine, benadryl, will be of help, you can continue with this as prophylaxis.

Please get back to me with the details.

Hoping i have answered your question.

All the best, take care.
