What Causes Swelling In The Neck?

default
Posted on Tue, 5 Sep 2017
Question: Good morning. I had substantial swelling on the left side of my neck / glands. I was out cutting down some shrubs yesterday morning and afterwards I noticed the inflamation. I also experienced irritation and soreness on that side of my throat. I placed ice on the area in question and took 2 high dose asperins. The swelling subsided substantially however I still have some inflamation / swelling. I examined the area in question and could not locate any entry point for a insect bite. Any opinions ?

Brief Answer:
insect bite or related to one of the plants

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Your response to the swelling was good. Aspirin and similar meds are anti inflammatory medications and since swelling is part of the body's inflammatory response, these types of meds would help.

As you mentioned, the swelling is likely due to an insect bite or it may also be due to irritation from one of the plants in the environment (leaves of the plant or any of secretions).

You should consider taking another dose of the aspirin or using another anti inflammatory medication (naproxen or ibuprofen) to help with the residual swelling that it present.
Though there is no itching, using one or two doses of an anti histamine would also help as well eg benadryl, claritine, allegra or zyrtec
These also reduce inflammation

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
