Question: I travel twice last year, and both times, my legs from my knee to go down got swollen my feet was so big, that i went to a doctor, he send me to do all test, heart test, sugar test, urine, just name it, when the results came he found out i had a kidney infection, my red blood cell is low, i am missing iron. He gave me iron tablets and septra for the kidney infection, still i was peeing so often and cannot even hold it. i took all the septra antibiotics as requested and still i was still have the symptoms, peeing all the time, to much its embarrassing when i have to go at work. i he advise i go back to take another test, i went it showed i still had the infection, it was lower, but still causing me havoc making peeing like rain. i don't feel no pain when peeing so i would never know i had an infection. Now my feet is hurting around my ankle area and it gets numb by my toes on my right leg. anytime i walk more than 1 mile it gets numb and starts to hurt by my ankle. Presently i am taking another antibiotics for ten days , sepbax, i am on my second day, and peeing like crazy, can you tell me what to do, is it because i have the infection my legs got swollen in the first place and its hurting and getting numb now.

Dear Madam,

Thank you for posting your query on HCM.

Well looking into your query I will like to tell you that what report you have sent me is not suggestive of much evidence of infection plus the culture report also suggest that only colonisers are present not the pathogenic organisms. If there is swelling in the body due to kideny reason it will first appear around the eyes plus both the ankles will be involved .

You should keep a chart of your intake and urine output . Since many doctors advise people to increase their fluid intake for treating urinary infection that may be the reason that yourare having excess urine . Sometimes fluid overlaod will also cause ankles to be swollen and hurt .

I will advsie you to continue with your antibiotics and start having cranberry juice which is a good alkaliniser for urine and probably it will settle on on its own . Since your burning has stopped and there is no fever plus the present report shows no red flag so I would suggest a conservative management .

Take care.

Thank you for your respond, however I never had a fever nor burning, the only symptoms i had was peeing frequently, it was to much and I could not hold it. the thing is both of my legs get swollen, especially the ankle area. but currently when i try to do walking for exercise purpose, my leg and toes get numb and painful especially around my ankle. What cause that? and what do you mean by (only colonisers are present not the pathogenic organisms.)

Dear Madam,

Thank you for reverting back.

Well by colonisers I meant that the organisms which are present are the same as the usual oragnisms that are present in health individuals in that area. Frequency of micturition is also a sign that there may be some infection going oneven when urine examination is not showing it .

The swelling of ankle can be due to reactive arthritis that after an urethritis or UTI patient may develop swelling of joints and numbness can be due to swelling . That can be the other possibilty . Your treating doctor has to see this aspect because only after examination it can be seen whether the swelling is on joints or it is generalised .

Take care.

Dr. Shruti
