What Causes Swelling And Stiffness In The Knee Post An Arthroscopy?

default
Posted on Fri, 12 May 2017
Question: I recently had an arthroscopy done to remove loose bodies and to clean out a ostechondral defect on my femur. The surgeon said he sent the bodies and the joint fluid for biopsy. What are they looking for? Also he said I may need repair of that defect in the future. I am confused as to what he means. I am having difficulty bending my knee. Is that normal post procedure for a couple of days? I am going to start physical therapy

Brief Answer:
Physiotherapy will help.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
A loose body in the knee joint is usually due to osteoarthritic changes but is sent for biopsy only to confirm this. No need to worry. The stiffness in the knee after the procedure is due to local swelling and it will gradually subside on its own as the knee heals. Physiotherapy will help in restoring the joint movement completely.
I hope this answers your query.

It is sent for biopsy for arthritis? And the fluid? I don't understand how they biopsy for arthritis. What do they check for? I thought biopsy was for cancer and stuff?

it rules out cancer.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
Biopsy of any removed tissue and fluid is done to rule out cancer and to confirm that it was a degenerative tissue. it helps in deciding the further line of treatment.
