What Causes Swelling And Pain In Vagina?

default
Posted on Thu, 15 May 2014
Question: Hi,
In the past two days my vagina has be swollen and hurts pretty bad. My boyfriend and I are sexually active and at times he can be aggressive. I tell him to take it easy because I'm not that loose but he says it is because I'm not relaxed enough. I've read things online about this and it said that I could have an allergic reaction or that I might need to use a lube. Sometimes he will luck his hand to make it more wet, is that the problem. It constantly feels like I need to go to the bathroom and right now I'm using vasiline to maybe stop the burn and itch. No he doesn't use condoms but he always pulls out and I've never had a yeast infection before. I'm 19 and he is 24 I don't know if age matters. Please if you could help me I would greatly appreciate it.

Brief Answer:
Possibility of Yeast Infection

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to healthcaremagic

I am Dr. Kakkar. I have gone through your concern and i have understood it.

I think yeast infection is the underlying problem for the symptoms that you have been experiencing

I would like to gather some more information from you in order to be able to help you better.

The most common symptom of a yeast infection is itchiness in and around the vagina.

Other symptoms include:

-Burning, redness, and swelling of the vagina and the vulva
-Pain/burning when passing urine
-Pain during sex
-Soreness
-A thick, white vaginal discharge that looks like cottage cheese
-A rash on the vagina

You may only have a few of these symptoms. They may be mild or severe.

If I was the treating doctor I would have asked you to take a single stat dose of Oral Fluconazole 150mg.

You could also apply a topical antifungal cream, twice daily e.g clotrimazole cream is available OTC OR can also use a clotrimazole Vaginal Pessary once daily at night for 7 days.

Well it doesn't really itch but it does burn when I go to the bathroom and I try to wipe really easy. Also I am swollen and do have pain. It doesn't seem to be red. Is there anything I can do to bring down the swelling and the pain. I know that after having sex you're supposed to go to the bathroom to prevent yeast infection and I do is there anything else I can do?
Thank you so much for your help!

Brief Answer:
Yeast Infection

Detailed Answer:
Hi.

The symptoms are suggestive of a vaginal yeast infection. You could apply a topical OTC antifungal cream e.g clotrimazole. A single dose of an oral antifungal e.g fluconazole 150mg also may be used.

Repeated douching can also lead to candidal vaginitis, I wonder if that could be the reason in your case.

General measures to follow:

-Keep the area around your genitals clean and dry.
-Avoid irritating soaps, vaginal douches.
-Change tampons and sanitary napkins frequently.
-Wear loose cotton underwear that doesn't trap moisture.
