default
Posted on Mon, 24 Aug 2015
Question: Hi Doctor,

My father had a fracture in ankle on 13th May and visited a doctor. He advised for a 25 day plaster which was done on 18th May and plaster was removed on 12 XXXXXXX

Even after so many days he has swelling on that area. Sometimes he feels a small pain if he walks or stands for long.

Request your advise on the same.
1. Is this swelling normal even after so many days?
2. What can be done when he feels or swelling on his ankle?

Thanks in advance for your answer.

Brief Answer:
Mild swelling is a normal finding.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
A mild soft tissue swelling can persist in the area of fracture even after the bone has healed. This is due to slightly decreased blood circulation, joint stiffness and mild post traumatic arthritis.
This will gradually subside with a regular hot compress and physiotherapy.
The intermittent will also decrease as the swelling decreases with time. Regular exercise is necessary to maintain proper joint mobility and blood circulation in the area.
I hope this answers your query.
