Brief Answer:
complete work up is required .

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXX,
I can understand your concern .
Based on information that you have given to me and old age this seems to be something more serious . It may be some gastrointestinal malignancies that we definitely rule out. Apart from that one treatable condition known as diverticulitis in which diverticula that is out pouching in bowel wall is formed that get infected sometimes . Patient present with pain abdomen specially pain in left lower quadrant of abdomen along with bleeding . This is common in old age.
To confirm the diagnosis we need complete history , examination and few work ups .
In my opinion you should consult your doctor as soon as possible because delay may cause excessive blood loss and other complications .
Hope this will help you

Dear Dr Tripathi: Santina is very healthy from walking 3 miles every day and doing physical work, not taking any prescription drugs and watching her diet. She has had tests at the hospital ER and all were normal--no infection. Dr Chow has her scheduled for a scope on 2/2/2015 here in Ashland, Oregon. I fear for her life if she has to wait so long with this problem and the serious loss of blood. Is there anything she can take in the meanwhile to reduce the blood flow such as slippery elm bark powder or saffron intestinal tea? Thanks, XXXX

Brief Answer:
Need work up as soon as possible .

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXXX
I can understand your concern . As you have mentioned dear ,fresh bleeding from rectum is an emergency and should be managed like that.
Considering her age there is always possibility of few serious causes as i have discussed . She needs urgent colonoscopy to find the cause.
The medicines you have mentioned help as local antiseptic , help in digestion and soothe the bowel. None has proven property to control bleeding .
In the meantime you try to maintain her hydration ask her to drink plenty of water and give her fibre rich diet for easy and smooth bowel movement . If there is continuous bleed then discuss about urgent need of diagnostic work up and treatment with your doctor .
Hope this will help you dear.
If you have any other concerns please feel free to message me . Thanks for contacting HCM .
