What Causes Severe Wheezing In A Child?
Information
Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome,
While there are things you can give for some of the cold symptoms that may be contributing to the wheezing (decongestant, mucolytic, nasal steroid), if he is wheezing, and this is a new symptom for him, he really should be examined by a doctor (and not a nurse practitioner or physician's assistant). Wheezing usually indicates decreased air flow through the bronchi due to inflammation and increased mucus production. In some situations, it can be due to a foreign body in the airways, but if he is currently having cold or allergy symptoms, then it is most likely from mucus and inflammation. A doctor can have a listen to his lungs and assess how well he is moving air, and may proscribe a bronchodilator inhaler medication, and possibly an inhaled steroid too (or a combination). If there are allergic symptoms, and antihistamine might decrease the cause somewhat.
So in answer to your question - for wheezing, he should be seen, and the medications that may be recommended are by prescription (inhaled bronchodilator, steroid that is either inhaled or oral).
I hope this information helps. Please let me know if I can provide further information.
