What Causes Severe Pain In Lower Back Radiating To Leg And Knee?

default
Posted on Wed, 18 Mar 2015
Question: Having several days of severe low back pain---mostly over my right kidney. Moving, i.e., bending over, mopping the floor, vacuuming, lifting the trash to take it outside, all make it worse, lying down helps a little. Pain sometimes radiates down my leg to the knee. Urinary output is fairly normal, although more frequent. Urine appears normal: no change in color, no odor, no cloudiness. No fever, mild N&V, mild anorexia, and mild headache that responds to Aleve. Nothing relieves back pain! I have a history of spinal disc herniation, but this is nothing like the pain I have associated with that. Increased fatigue. Heat or ice do nothing to relieve pain. Massage is unbearable.

Brief Answer:
likely to be having lumbar spondylitis

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for choosing healthcaremagic for posting your query.

I'm Dr. Sudhir Kumar.

I have gone through your question in detail and understand your concern. You are likely to be having lumbar spondylitis with degenerative disc disease as it is common in your age. It can be confirmed by x ray and MRI of lumbar spine. Treatment of it is rest and analgesic such as ibuprofen for pain relief. Diacerine and glucosamine are helpful in slowing degenerative changes.Methylcobalamine is helpful in radiating pain relief. Back excercises may be useful once pain subsides. You can get your vitamin D level and get supplements of vitamin D3 if found low. You can discuss with your doctor about it.

Hope I have answered your query.
If you have any further query, I would be glad to help you.

Wishing you a good health
Take care.

Brief Answer:
Doesn't seems to be nephrolithiasis

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Welcome back
By your description it doesn't seems to be nephrolithiasis as pain is aggrevated by movements and relieved by rest and there is no related urinary symptoms. However it can be excluded by sonography and CT scan of the area.
Rest has already been discussed.

If you have any further query, I would be glad to help you.
If not, you may close the discussion and if possible you may rate the answer for me, so that I get a good feedback.
