Question: In Dec 2016 , I underwent ESWL for 5-6mm renal calculus(right kidney). Ever since I had some discomfort/ occasional pain/tenderness in right side kidney area. the same doctor used to tell this will go after sometime. But still no relief. So I underwent a Urological XXXXXXX checkup only to fine right Kidney has the same calculus + multiple cysts+ right Kidney enlargement. herewith I am attaching the test reports. Please suggest what to do now? Is there any possibility of malignancy regarding the cysts?

Brief Answer:
Renal Cortical Cysts are not to be worried about .

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for query .
Based on the facts that you have posted you had a Stone in Rt Renal cortex for which you were subjected to ESWL however your recent Ultrasound scan has revealed the Renal cortical stone of a size of 6x5mm on Rt side and small
renal Cortical stones in Left Renal cortex along with Renal Cortical cysts on both sides.

Truly speaking the results of ESWL for Renal Cortical stones are not satisfactory as the fragments of the stone do not drain out in calyx or Renal pelvis .As the stones are non obstructing stones hence rarely is the cause for renal pain hence can be left alone .

As regards the presence of cysts in both the kidneys they are benign cyst present from the birth and rarely required to be treated .The treatment for such cysts is advocated only in a situation when they get infected or suddenly increase in size over a short period of time as detected on Ultrasound Scanning .

I would suggest you to repeat Ultrasound Scanning at another center to confirm whether the stone that you have are in Renal Cortex or Collecting system of Kidneys .

There is nothing to be worried about and there is no possibility of Cancer as you have thought of .

You can take pain killers as and when required and repeat your Ultrasound Scan every three months to monitor the size of stones and Cysts .

Hope I have answered your query ,please feel free to ask if you have more questions,I shall be happy to help you
Thanks and Regards.

Thanks for your useful reply Dr. XXXXXXX I will repeat a USG or CT Urography very soon and consult some other Urologist locally. One more query: As per your vast experience in Urology, the enlargement of right Kidney mentioned in the USG report and also the size of Kidney mentioned, do I need to worry about it? What is this actually and how the kidney is enlarged?

Brief Answer:
There is nothing to be wworried about size of the kidney .

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for follow up .

The precise size of the Right kidney is not mentioned in report .I would differ from making a vague statement like kidney is enlarged without mentioning the size of the kidney That is the reason I have suggested you to repeat Scanning at some other center .

The slight enlargement of kidney is expected and is mainly due to presence of cysts .However it is the status of kidney function that significant than size .

Get blood test for Renal functions done to assure about the functions of kidneys.

Thanks and Regards.
