What Causes Regular Extension Of Hip And Knee Joints In Baby?

default
Posted on Thu, 8 Jan 2015
Question: My 7.5 month old son has been getting small jolts where he will extend his legs and straighten his body a bit. He is not distressed, but will do it several times in a row. This only happens when he is lying down, otherwise we don't see them. If I distract him by sitting up he doesn't do it. He is feeding well, sitting unassisted, lots of sounds and vocalizations. I am concerned about infantile spasms. He had genetic testing done in utero and both brain and cardio testing with everything clear.

Brief Answer:
It is normal response

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome to Healthcare-Magic
Greetings of the day

Dear Ms

Going by description, it definitely does not seem to be infantile spasm. Babies usually have jitteriness of movements especially while extending the hip and knee joint. While the baby's attention is distracted, the very absence of the jitteriness suggest it to be normal. There is absolutely nothing to be worried about.

Thank you for your response.
In your opinion are tic like extensions common at this stage neurologically? I mean extension in the way that he quickly extends his legs and body like a jolt has run through him?
Kind regards,

Brief Answer:
It is unlikely to be tics

Detailed Answer:
Dear Ms

Tics are not common at this age. The nervous system of infant is neurological immature as Myelination (protective cover over the nerve ) is not complete at this age. There could be rapid movements like this and there seems to be no cause for concern. As you have mentioned baby is otherwise fine and then there are no such movement on distraction , it does not indicate any abnormality.

Wishing you and your family a very happy and healthy life.

Take care
