Question: I've been stressed out for awhile now after losing job and started drinking a lot more heavily on weekends.....this past weekend I drink very heavily for 3 street days and also smoked a couple packs of cigarettes Friday thru Sunday I woke up Monday with a hangover of course and late Monday night I noticed some redness on the roof of my mouth and my tonsils seemed large and some redness as well...the day I noticed that my tongue had a whitey film on it that looks kind of hairy and has t gone away for 2 days.....could this be caused by the heavy drinking for 3 straight days or could it be strep throat I don't have a fever though. Thanks for any help or info you can give me.

Brief Answer:
Can be oral thrush or follicular tonsillitis

Detailed Answer:
Hi! Welcome to Health Care Magic! Thanks for sharing your concerns with us. We will try to help you in best way possible. First of all, it is sad to know what you had gone through.

Based on the history you have shared, it can be early fungal infection which may present without fever as the other common possibility can be follicular tonsillitis, but usually with such membrane formed and throat inflammation that you had mentioned, the person becomes toxic and runs high grade fever.

But I would suggest that in any case, please get it examined by an ENT specialist as verbal description won't be sufficient in making a confirmed diagnosis against a proper clinical examination . To start with, Oral antifungal drops (eg. Candid Mouthpaint) can be started and gargles with XXXXXXX warm saline water may help too. If fever or pain kicks in then using OTC analgesics like Acetaminophen will help.

Meanwhile kindly try to reduce the heavy drinking as it is associated with very serious implications on liver and stomach. Social drinking or routine drinking can be okay but such heavy drinking will also hurt your own self and losing a job doesn't mean to start punishing yourself as it wasn't end of the world. You will hopefully get a better opportunity and a better job in near future.

Try not to stay alone for long during such stress periods and always try to prefer some company or friends so that you can remain busy in social interactions and may not over think the whole matter repeatedly.

Wishing you a speedy recovery and a successful life ahead. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask.
Regards.

I just went to an urgent care center and the doctor there said it didnt look like oral thrush and didnt seem concerened but when i looked at some of the pics of thrush online they looked similar to my tongue and she did a strep test which was negative.....should i still be concerned or should i just take the doctors word for it or go het another opinion....she also said the irritation on my throat could be from acid reflux and that the coating on my tongue was not thrush

Brief Answer:
Do supportive measures and monitor for any worsening of symptoms

Detailed Answer:
Hi! Thanks for the feedback.

Yes the redness can be due to reflux but, white coating isn't explained by it. If throat culture is negative you can wait for a while.

Meanwhile keep doing gargles and using anti histamines. Antibiotics can wait for a while. If symptoms worsened then please get an ENT specialist opinion for a detailed examination under direct vision.

Regards.
