What Causes Prolonged Bleeding When On Atenolol?

Posted on Wed, 7 Jan 2015
Question: Hi again Dr. Shehu:

So great of you to ask how things are going. I am taking the Atenolol one tablet daily. Medication is helping me. I do notice, however, that when stress is elevated the pvcs get worse and when I focus on them they even get worse. Its a vicious cycle. I am trying to reduce my stress but things just keep happening. I am 60 years old, in good shape weigh 115 lbs. I just got light bleeding the other day after having stopped my mensus 5 years ago. I just went the the gyn for yearly office visit, pap smear normal office visit normal, I do have fibroids which I was told are getting smaller. Now with this light bleeding, I am having cramps. Had an abdominal and pelvic ultrasound which showed fibroids only. Your thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated. Could stress have brought this on as well. Should I be concerned of cancer. GYN also did pap sure which was normal as well. Thank you again.

Brief Answer:
Stress couldn't cause light bleeding, fibrinoid tissue yes&it's not cancer.

Detailed Answer:
Hi Again!

It's nice to hear that my advice were helpful for you.

My opinion is that stress couldn't cause light vaginal bleeding and abdominal cramps. The most probable causes is fibrinoid tissue found on ultrasound. In most of the case it's a benign tissue (not a cancer). However you should discus with your doctor about the best way to deal with this problem.

Wish you health!

Hi Doctor
Thanks for your response. Could taking low dose 81mg aspirin cause this bleeding. I heard on the news that taking low dose aspirin under the age of 65 can have serious bleeding problems? Another thing can aspirin make pvcs worse? Thank you for your quick response.

Brief Answer:
Aspirin may be a precipitating factor for vaginal bleeding...

Detailed Answer:
Hi back,

Aspirin use at any age (especially after 65 age) has as a common side effects gastrointestinal bleeding. Also as an antiplatelet preparation aspirin may worsen vaginal bleeding (from gynecological problems as in your case). My opinion is that aspirin may be a precipitating (contributor) factor but not the cause.

Aspirin can't make your PVCs worse at low doses (baby aspirin 81 mg). It can make PVCs worse at large doses even may be the cause of PVCs (at doses exceeding 1500 mg per day).

Wish you health!

Brief Answer:
You can just stop taking aspirin..

Detailed Answer:
Hi Back again!

You can just stop taking aspirin and within five days platelet aggregation (the effect of aspirin or anti-platelet effect) will come back to normal.

Doing so will help to stop the bleeding.

Wish you health!
