Brief Answer:
there are various potential causes

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

this is a vague symptom, too broad to provide significant clues to any diagnosis but there are some disorders that may cause it. Anxiety is the most common one...

Other potential causes include: various types of infections (sweating is more prominent after fever, when the temperature goes down), thyroid disease (hyperthyroidism), various types of malignancies (lymphomas mostly), etc. If anxiety is not enough to justify it, then a general laboratory investigation (with complete blood count, ESR, CRP, TSH, biochemical panel) and clinical examination (for lymph nodes, enlarged abdominal organs), etc may help.

Kind Regards!

I have had a knee replacement which needs revision, the doctor has had several blood tests done looking for infection and they are all negative. I have been tested for thyroid disease yearly as I have had some hair loss. These have been negative as well. I am retired and I do not believe anxiety is a problem either. Is there any other suggestions as to what my problem is? It is really quite annoying.

Brief Answer:
no more ideas if the tests are negative...

Detailed Answer:
I'm afraid there are not many ideas left if all the tests are negative. A complete biochemical panel, TSH, CRP, ESR and radiological tests for the liver, spleen and lymph nodes (to detect enlargement) are important to do. If you've done all of them then there's nothing more to do. In that case (if anxiety is excluded) you should talk with your dermatologist about localized hyperhidrosis, which is a functional disorder of the sweat glands causing excessive sweating in certain parts of the body. There are some treatments for it but this is up to the dermatologist to decide.

Kind Regards!
