Question: Hi, I am 59 yrs old and am experiencing popping sounds in the knee joints and right shoulder. This time it was very painful. Everytime I massaged or stretched the muscles I was burping or passing gas, I wore a compression stocking on the knee and the pain went away. I took the stocking off this morning and the pain came back.Very strange occurance! Just to let you know in 2005 I had a blood clot on left leg due to transference of clot from the superficial vein to the deep vein. Was treated for this and the doctor took me off blood thinner after 6 mths. Other wise I am in very good health, Do not take medications for anything. Do have varicose veins though.

Brief Answer: It can be knee arthritis Detailed Answer: Hello, Thanks for your query. I have read your history and I think this time it is not a clot but it is decrease in joint space in knee joint ( knee arthritis) which is troubling you. As You said that there is also cracking sound from knee so this also proves that. For confirming the diagnosis, we need a x ray of knee joint. Treatment depends on how much pain you are having, and how much gap is decreased in x ray. 1. In early stage it is pain killer like Brufen, physiotherapy and calcium, along with compression bandage at knee joint. The stocking gave you pain relief because it supports knee joint. 2.if medications are not having any relief then steroid injection in knee is other management. 3. In very late stages knee surgery is needed. So I think your pain is not since long, you may be well with physiotherapy and brufen and calcium. Avoid squatting on floor and using stairs for some time. Please let me know if you want to ask any thing else. Thanks and take care.

Thank you for your reply. Would like to know what the physiotherapy entails. I stopped calcium for a little while. Just started taking them again. You are right concerning stairs. Been walking up and down stairs deliberately everywhere I went for exercise. That was when the cracking and knee problem started. I thought keeping my legs fit would avoid such problems.

Brief Answer: These are easy exercises Detailed Answer: 1. Avoid running fast, staircase, or on recline surface 2. Static quadriceps exercises - tight your thigh muscles for 1minute, then relax, when you are lying on bed, sitting on chair. (you can learn from physio) 3. Avoid weight gain. 4. Do not run on hard surface like track but on treadmill. I hope this answers your queries. Let me know if I can answer any other question. Thanks and take care.
