What Causes Persistent Vomiting In A 28 Week Pregnant Woman?

Posted on Wed, 22 Jun 2016
Question: Hi! My sister is 28 weeks pregnant and has been vomiting for 6 days in a row non stop, even while she has been hospitalized, the Obgyn says they are both ok. Has not had a fever, but she had a lap band procedure several year before and just under went surgery so the bark attic Doctor could open it. After 24 hours she is still vomiting non stop and now he variation doctor says he will remove it completely. Should the father of he baby request her to get a c section prior to more surgeries? So that atleast the baby doesn't get all those drugs? Or could the cause of all the vomiting be from eating octopus or pork at a bbq ? Because the md has not done a culture or parasite to rule out other causes.
Thank you for all the advise!!!

Brief Answer:
Waiting for C-section would be too late.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
The cause of vomiting that is continuous is more likely to be due to lap procedure. The vomiting due to eating pork or parasite is more likely to be temporary. At 28 weeks, it is not wise to wait till 36 weeks and then get a C- section and then control the vomiting. Continuous vomiting will cause weakness in both mother and baby. It is better to get it removed completely to control the vomiting. You can get a culture done before the repeat surgery to remove the doubt of infection.

Brief Answer:
Depends on the medicines given.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
The surgery itself is not likely to cause a major harm but the medicines given may affect the growth of the baby depending on the medicines given.
But since your doctors know that your sister is pregnant, they will use the medicines that will not affect the growth of the baby. So please do not worry.
Hope my answer is helpful.

The meds shes on are dilaudid, protonix, magnesium, potassium chloride and Tylenol for the pain after the general anesthesia is gone. Can those affect the baby?

Brief Answer:
These all are safe.

Detailed Answer:
Dilaudid is a pregnancy category C drug and can cause physical dependence if used for a long time. It will not affect the growth of the baby at 28 weeks as the organogenesis is complete by then. Rest of the medicines are category B drugs and are safe for use during pregnancy. These will not affect the baby. Please do not worry.
Regards.
