What Causes Persistent Sore Throat, Redness In Left Tonsil And Swollen Right Tonsil?

default
Posted on Thu, 7 Apr 2016
Question: Today is day 12 of a sore throat. On day 8, the instacare doctor said I had symptoms consistent with Adenovirus. My eyes are no longer red/pink and weepy but the sore throat persists. Looking at my throat, I can see that my left tonsil is red, but not swollen and my right tonsil is slightly swollen. No fever, no white bumps. The instacare doctor prescribed Prednisone but I haven't taken it yet because I have Type 2 diabetes. What are your thoughts?

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing.

I am Dr.Muhammad Ahmad. I have read your question completely, i understand your concern and will try to help you in best way possible.

According to your history and how things have progressed, in my opinion you had an infection most probably viral which has got settled.

Now you are left with a bit of subclinical inflammation which is causing mild symptoms and redness on tonsils.

In my opinion this will get settled by itself in a week or so , but if your doctor has asked you to use steroids there must be a reason behind it, specially if he knew you were diabetic and still prescribed them. The doctor who does the checkup in person always has a better idea of things.

Regarding steroids, i am pleased to know that you are aware that steroids do cause problems with your sugar control, but sometimes when somebody can get enough benefit with a short use then we recommend their usage like in my opinion you wont have to use them for more then 7-10 days , in this case you can use them with strict diet control so that sugar doesn't get much disturbed. In such cases we weigh benefits over risks.
If your doctor knew you were diabetic still he recommended steroids then i would suggest you to use them as suggested and keep you sugars in check..In case of any major issue there is always an option to talk to your doctor.

I hope this answered your question, a
if you have more please feel free to ask.
