What Causes Persistent Joint And Muscle Pain Along With Elevated Alkaline Phosphatase Levels?

default
Posted on Tue, 21 Jul 2015
Question: I am having joint and muscle pain all the time. My Alk Phos is 278 and ggt is also elevated. I don't drink, my gallbladder was removed in 98, and I have one kidney but all the Bun and creatinine levels were fine. I've had a chronic cough since December. I am exhausted and ache all over constantly. I do not smoke. Any ideas? I had a liver ultrasound today and the tech had those "looks" I've seen with my own patients. Does any of this link together ?

Brief Answer:
Could you upload LFT report using the image upload facility on upper right

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone carefully through the details. The rise in alkaline phosphatase as well as GGT indicate some acute liver injury which could be due to alcohol intake. But since you mention that you are not a drinker, other factors like viral hepatitis need to be considered. A complete liver function rest report would help me to guide you further. Corroboration with the USG report would be helpful. I do not understand what exactly you have meant by the value of "98". I would be glad if you clarify.

Your aching all over could be due to electrolyte imbalance. Take plenty of juicy fruits like citrus fruits. They contain plenty of potassium which should be helpful. Let me know if it helps.

About the chronic cough, the evaluation of the cause requires clinical evaluation. I would like to ask if you take any anti-hypertension medication since some of them have a known side effect of dry cough. In any case, taking steam inhalation should be helpful. Water in the form of vapour reaches deep inside and helps in diluting the cough. That should provide relief.

These three sets of symptoms may be independently present and need not necessarily correlate.
