Brief Answer:
post nasal drip of mucus

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

The most common reason for persistent coughing and clearing of the throat is post nasal drip of mucus.

This mucus would cause the saliva to be thicker.

If you are intolerant or allergic to some foods then this would cause the mucus to occur. One patient of mine, when we did her allergy tests to find out the cause of her post nasal drip, found out that she was allergic to banana.
A food diary for 1 to 2 weeks or allergy tests, would help determine which foods are the likely culprits.

Some persons can get these symptoms with dust, pollen, animal dander, medications.

Treatment consists: (1) eliminating or reducing exposure to any aggravating factor
(2)use of an antihistamine decongestant combination eg zyrtec d, allegra d, claritine d
These are over the counter medications
(3)in some cases a nasal spray such as nasonex or nasocort or flonase would be needed
A prescription may be needed from your doctor

If there is no control with the above then other meds such as singulair or ketotifen can be used.

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
