Posted on Thu, 7 Jul 2016
Question: Dr. XXXXXXX XXXXXXX I developed an infection while visiting Italy some months ago: (mycobacterium chelonae), for which there are only 2 antibiotics which work: clarithromycin and linezolid. After Dr. Kumar's message, I contacted my infectious disease doctor who said that Peripheral neuropathy is a rare but possible side effect of using linezolid. He took me off of the linezolid immediately, but doesn't know if the neuropathy can be reversed.

Brief Answer:
Get evaluated for neuropathy

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Clinical symptomatology is of peripheral neuropathy.
Drug related neuropathy secondary to linezolid use can be one possibility but is usually dose and duration dependent.
Other possibility for neuropathy like diabetes, renal, liver or thyroid disease or vitamin B12 deficiency should be evaluated along with nerve conduction studies.
Hope you found the answer helpful.
