What Causes Painful Swelling In The Armpit?

default
Posted on Thu, 16 Feb 2017
Question: I have swelling in my left armpit on my right side. It can be painful at times. There are no lumps. I had a sonogram but it didn't show anything. What could it be or what could be causing it?

Brief Answer:
Please give some more details.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

Since when do you have this swelling? Can you please attach a photo of it? Did you have mammography and breast ultrasound done? Do you feel any left hand numbness? Do you have fever? Have you had any injury of this area recently? Have you had any injections close to this area recently? Why do you take prednisone?

I`m looking forward to hearing from you.
Regards.

I have had the swelling since November. I had a Mammogram and it was clear. I have not had an injury or injection. I don't have a fever or numbness. I do have a dull pain in my armpit and upper arm occasionally.. I took Prednisone for my Sarcoidosis. I don't see how to attach a photo to this message. I have one so if you could give me an email address or XXXXXXX phone number I could send it.

Brief Answer:
Doppler veins ultrasound should be done for sure.

You can send the picture to YYYY@YYYY and mark it for query ID 314817.
In my opinion you should have Doppler veins ultrasound of the arm at first. Veins thrombosis (its not that rare) in this location can give such swelling which can remain for a long time without a treatment.
You should also have breast ultrasound (mammogram is not enough). If the swelling is around the joint, its inflammation can be the main reason. If so, you should consult orthopedist.
As you take Prednisone, you wont have a fever with most of infections. That is why, it should be carefully diagnosed.

I have sent the photo. Let me know if your recommendations change.

I only took Prednisone for a short time period, 2 weeks. I was not running a temp before that time in November and I was also on antibiotics. Neither seemed to effect the swelling.

Detailed Answer:
According to the photo your have attached, my recommendations do not change. I would start with breast ultrasound at this point.
