What Causes Painful Intercourse?

default
Posted on Mon, 1 Dec 2014
Question: Hello. When my boyfriend and I have intercourse, it is painful for me (feels like a burning or like he is hitting a wall). I know it is my muscles involuntarily clenching. If I take a small dose of Ativan prior to intercourse, would it make it less painful?

Brief Answer:
Dyspareunia

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for writing to us about it.

Painful intercourse (dyspareunia) can take place due to so many reasons like vaginismus, vaginal infection, STD infection, fibroid, psychological, cervical infection, dryness etc.

In my opinion first you should find out the cause and treat it accordingly. So, visit an Gyaencologist for examination and management.

Follow these advices it may be helpful, do not take ativan without consulting your treating physician.

- Increase the duration of foreplay
- Employ a good quality of lubricant before sex
- Maintain vaginal hygiene
- Do pelvic floor muscle exercise
- Empty the bladder before sex
- Get proper treatment if the infection is there
- Take pain killer for pain

Hope it is useful, feel free to ask more.

Good luck.
Regards

Hi,
My doctor suspects Vaginismus. No STDs or other issues mentioned in your response. We're doing the suggestions you provided as well. But I am wondering if a small dosage would help me relax during i (from the anxiety and muscle relaxant)?t

Brief Answer:
Ativan may cause sexual dysfunction in female.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Nice to hear from you again though.

Ativan can cause female sexual dysfunction, so better you should ward off this medication and go for NSAIDs for pain.

It is an axiolytic drug, but it may cause drowsiness as well.

So please follow my advices as we have discussed earlier.

If you desire to take the ativan then you should consult your treating physician for the same.

Hope it is useful, feel free to ask more questions.

Good luck.
Regards
Dr.Richa
