Posted on Mon, 6 Mar 2017
Question: I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes 5 days ago. My blood sugar was at 850. After being in the hospital 2 days I am home. I also thought that my gout flaired up and told the Dr. He gave me coltries for three days but did nothing. My left knee is swollen a bit warm to the touch and very sore on the left side in the joint and behind the right side. It is worse at night and laying down. He has ordered me to go see a ortho. It can resonate down my calf and make my large toe seem a bit numb.

My uric acid levels were fine.

Brief Answer:
Gout with normal uric acid level???

Detailed Answer:
Hello
I have gone through your query and understood your concern.

Gout is a kind of arthritis.
It can cause an attack of sudden burning pain, stiffness, and swelling in a joint, usually a big toe.
These attacks can happen over and over unless gout is treated. Over time, they can harm your joints, tendons, and other tissues. Gout is most common in men.

Gout is caused by too much uric acid in the blood.
Many people with high levels in their blood never get gout. But when uric acid levels in your blood are too high, the uric acid may form hard crystals in your joints.

The amount of uric acid in your blood and in fluid of your joint is high in Gout.
It is strange that your uric acid level were fine.
(Maybe the uric acid test must be redone.(Let me know the result, i'm curious to know.)

To stop a gout attack, your doctor can give you a shot of corticosteroids or prescribe a large daily dose of one or more medicines The doses will get smaller as your symptoms go away. Relief from a gout attack often begins within 24 hours if you start treatment right away.

To ease the pain during a gout attack, rest the joint that hurts.
Taking ibuprofen or another anti-inflammatory medicine can also help you feel better.
But don't take aspirin. It can make gout worse by raising the uric acid level in the blood.

Colcrys (colchicine) affects the way the body responds to uric acid crystals, which reduces swelling and pain.

You should know that Colcrys is not a cure for gouty arthritis and it will not prevent these diseases from progressing. So,it will not help you with your symptoms.

Anyway,if the second test of uric acid is normal,i suggest to consult a rheumatologist or an ortho(as your doctor ordered) and discuss with him about the right diagnose and treatement.

Hope i have clarified your doubts.
