What Causes Pain In The Upper Right Side Of The Abdomen?

default
Posted on Thu, 1 Oct 2015
Question: I have had a pain in my side that goes from my kidney up around into my stomach for 5 days. It wakes me up with pain and it makes it hard to take a deep breath. Is this something to do with the muscle mass on my side - that I slept wrong or strained it?

Brief Answer:
Gallstones can be the reason.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

If the pain is on the right side, such symptoms are characteristic for gallstones. You mat have also nausea, lack of appetite with this issue. As the liver and gallbladder moves while breathing, you may have the pain when breathing.
Other possible reasons of such symptoms are kidney infection, kidney stones or, mentioned by you muscular problem.
Kidney issues usually gives frequent urinating, lower abdominal pain.
Strained muscle gives more intense pain after physical activity. And it should get less intense after pain killers like Ibuprophen.

I suggest you to consult your doctor and have abdominal ultrasound done to rule out gallstones. In case of muscle issue, try physical therapy and massage. If this wont help, consult orthopedist.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.

Can not be gallstones as I have had my gallbladder removed. It is on the left side. I am not urinating more.

Brief Answer:
Strained muscle or rib nerve can be the reason.

Detailed Answer:
Than rib nerve pain or strained muscle seem to be the most probable reason. Please try to take some pain killer like Ibuprohen and start some muscles relaxing activity like pool swimming. Massage can be helpful as well.
And if such treatment wont help in next few days, please consult orthopedist.
