What Causes Pain In Shoulders?

default
Posted on Tue, 14 Oct 2014
Question: Hello doctor ,
Hello doctor
Today in the morning when I was about to wake up , my shoulder pained like anything . For some time the area from below the neck till the left shoulder was like numb . I immediately applied Oxalgin gel and iodex on the part .But the pain has still not subsided completely. There was slight pain initially from evening , but it could aggravate so much I didn’t even expect . The pain slightly got spread over entire left hand till my fingers for sometime .
In one of our office medical training , we were told to apply ice on that part .
Is this the correct process of treatment .

Brief Answer:
Neck muscle spasm likely.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
Your symptoms are suggestive of three conditions-
1) Neck muscle spasm- due to overuse or injury. Needs muscle relaxants like thiocolchicoside along with pain killers for relief under guidance of an orthopaedician. You can do a hot fomentation for now.
2)Cervical spondylosis- the numbness and pain till the hand is suggestive of a nerve root irritation.
3) Old fracture neck vertebra which is now getting displaced after use. You need a cervical collar to give rest to your neck muscles till you get an X-ray or MRI done to rule out the injury.
In my opinion you do need to consult an orthopaedician first to reach a diagnosis after proper investigations.
Till then you can have a mild pain killer like ibuprofen for pain relief.
I hope this answers your query.
