What Causes Pain In Leg And Numbness Of Right Arm?

default
Posted on Mon, 26 May 2014
Question: Hi, my name is XXXXX. I was diagnosed with Sciatica the first time I went to the DR. with pain. He prescribed me some pain meds and sent me home. I went back with more severe pain on my right side, and also experiencing shooting pains going down my leg. He told me "I needed to relax", and prescribed me Xanax. 3 weeks later, I stood up from my chair, and had no feeling from my right knee down. NO FEELING. I went to the emergency room here in Columbus, TX. I was told I had drop foot, and was transferred to XXXXXXX where I spent 7 days. I had MRI's which found some bulging discs, but not enough to warrant surgery. Needless to say, I now have a different Dr. I still have no feeling on the front of that leg, and am experiencing numbness in the right arm at times. I am having a hard time finding a neurologist that will take my insurance. Can you help me? I am wearing an AFO to help keep my foot up. My new Dr. has me on Lyrica and vitamin D supplements. I don't want to mask the pain, I want to know what is wrong with me.
I was also told it was poreneal nerve palsy

Brief Answer:
I agree with the management done so far.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for posting your query.

I have noted your symptoms and the treatment done so far. They are along correct lines.

Your problem is peripheral neuropathy, where the nerves in feet/legs, or hands/forearms often get affected. The extent of nerve involvement can be found out by doing nerve conduction studies (NCS and EMG). The symptom of foot drop and numbness over leg occurs due to peroneal neuropathy.

Then, we need to find out the cause of this neuropathy. In a young person like you, we need to exclude collagen vascular disease and vasculitis as a cause. In some cases, infections can also be responsible. Further investigations would include blood tests such as ANA profile, C XXXXXXX and P XXXXXXX and may be a nerve biopsy.

You can continue the treatment as at present until you see a neurologist.

I hope it helps. Please get back if you have any follow up queries.

Best wishes,
Dr Sudhir Kumar MD DM (Neurology) XXXXXXX Consultant Neurologist
