default
Posted on Tue, 7 Oct 2014
Question: My wife is currently experiencing pain in her esophagus area with burning sensations. This came on suddenly, no activities beforehand no big meal or any foods high in acid. She has felt like throwing up but can't, states it feels like something is in her throat, however, she can drink water and keep it down so it doesn't appear to be an esophageal obstruction. She is 43 years old and in good health. The pain is mainly in the chest area however she feels some discomfort in her back as well.

Detailed Answer:
Dear Friend.
Welcome to HCM. I am Dr Anshul Varshney. I understand your concern.
Such description and symptoms most commonly occurs in Acid Peptic Disease and Heart issues.
Important here is to be aware. Its not like that only a heavy meal can precipitate the acidity. It can be precipitated by stress, pain killer, any medication.
More important and worry some is chest pain and these symptoms that might be of cardiac origin.
We can't take a risk. I advise to get her ECG done.
Also get her a combination of Pantoprazole and Domperidone with Acid neutralizers like ENO, digene/gelusil.
If in case this is because of acidity she would get relief with these medicines else she would require cardiac evaluation and ultrasound Abdomen for gall bladder stones.
I wish her a speedy recovery.
If you have any further query please ask me.
Stay Healthy.
