Brief Answer:
Multiple causes

Detailed Answer:
hi thanks for your question.

numbness and weakness in your sons leg could only really be caused by a neurological issue.

one of the commonest causes of numbness and weakness in the leg is a prolapsed intervertebral disc in your lumbar spine pressing on the nerves in the Lower back. however this would usually cause pain also in the leg.

direct problems with the nerves themselves, a so called peripheral neuropathy could cause numbness and weakness. the commonest cause of a neuropathy is diabetes although there are other causes.

lastly as you pointed out a problem with the brain itself such as a stroke could cause such an issue.

with a thorough medical history and physical examination your family dr should be able to determine the likely cause and organise investigations and treatment.

I hope this answers your question

best wishes
