What Causes Nausea While Sleeping On The Left Side?

default
Posted on Mon, 15 May 2017
Question: If I am resting on my left side, I feel nauseous. It goes away after I turn over on my right side. If I know I'm going to go to sleep, I make sure I'll fall asleep on my right side. I do have gerd, for which I take pepsid, but not sure that explains the nausea while resting on my left side. If I happen to fall asleep on my left side, I wake up violently, for which my doctor says possible sleep apnea and to get tested for it.

But I'm thinking I have TWO different problems on left side. Besides, I don't wake up violently from right side. I sleep peacefully on right side. This has been going on for many years. I take enzymes with every meal, as I do have gall bladder "attacks." I don't remember what the practitioner said about gall bladder. I seem to remember the word "inificiant" regarding the gall bladder, so that's when I started taking enzymes. Last blood panel indicated fatty liver. I'm 20 pounds overweight. My diet is full of fat. I seem to be addicted to fats and sugars No diabetes though. blood pressure normal. Chronic constipation as of a month ago. Never had constipation prior. I get it that if I get on a better diet, fatty liver would get better, and I'm going to go to a fat farm to try to get better eating habits. but I still have this nausea while resting on my left side, and wonder if it's a tumor or a hernia or obstruction of some kind. Thanks, XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Overlapping problems like gastritis,Gall bladder disease, severe constiptn.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for choosing HealthcareMagic for your query.

Possibility 1-
Have gone through your details the symptoms you are explaining is most likely due to overlapping of problems like constipation poor, food habits GERD etc.Your diet pattern is adding to your problem.
As per the text chronic constipation frequently causes abdominal pain. While the pain from constipation can occur anywhere in the abdomen, the most common location is the left quadrant. More serious causes of pain in the left abdomen may lead to constipation, but these causes will almost always be accompanied by additional symptoms like nausea.

Possibility 2-
Diverticulosis is the condition of having diverticula in the colon that are not inflamed. These are outpockets of the colonic mucosa and submucosa through weaknesses of muscle layers in the colon wall.Diverticula's are present in left side of abdomen.

Possibility 3--
Left sided abdominal pain associated with posture can be muscular in origin. As we grow old our muscle loses their origional strenght.Hence lying on a particular side can cause pain.

Possibility 4 -You are having excess fats in your meals despite of the fact that you have gall bladder attacks. All the above three possibilities along with this one can be contributing to your problem.

As per your query regarding tumour or hernia easy way out is to go for a ultra sonogram abdomen.Things wil be clear in 10 minutes. On the basis of history even withouty physically examining you its not easy to make a direct comment on your diagnosis.

Firstly i would strongly suggest you to go for few baseline tests of Gastroenterology like-
Ultra sound abdomen.
Xray abdomen AP and Lateral view.
If possible MRI abdomen-Highly sensitive test will rule out all possibilities from muscle sprain to tumour and hernia etc.

Constipatiom may be causing impaction of stools in your large intestine causing pain.

General suggestions are-
Start taking a probiotic(VSL#3) twice daily,Probiotics contains lactobacillus. These are good bacteria's help in proper digestion of food and will help to revive your depleted gastric flora.Gut flora is the complex community of microorganisms that live in the digestive tracts of humans.
Take Fybogel husk-Fybogel sachets and Fybogel Hi-Fibre or Metamucil sachets both contain the active ingredient ispaghula husk.It will improve your bowel habits. It will help forming bulky stools.Initially soak it for 20 minutes in XXXXXXX warm water after that take it.
Apart from medicines,
-Add fibres to your diet. Fiber adds bulk to your digestive system. It is broadly accessible in grains, vegetables and natural products. Concentrate on soluble fiber.
-Consume plenty fruits and vegetables.
-Take carbohydrates in required quantity like bread, rice, oats, pasta, potatoes, and plantain.
- Include substitutes like soya, rice or oat, milk and yogurts that are rich in calcium in your diet.
-Take a limited amount of foods high in fats and sugars..
-Drink a lot of liquid, no less than 66 ounce every day.
-Take one cup of seasonal fruit daily.

Medications advice
Take lactulose 10 to 15 mg once daily at night with half cup of XXXXXXX warm water. Its a laxative and will relieve you from constipation. As constipation is relievbed stools will pass out easily from sigmoid colon on left side hence relieving your pain.
Indigestible food usually ferments and produces different type of gases and toxins hence proper digestion by normal gut flora is very essential.

Mild fatty liver is a normal finding and has no clinical significance.

So medicines along with investigations along with all other suggestions given by me should be discussed with your gastroenterologist.
