default
Posted on Mon, 6 Jul 2015
Question: My 17 year old healthy son, had a fever and cold/sweats general illness for 3 days. Most people at his job at a grocery store experienced the same symptoms, but now after fever is gone he cant hold any food/ 7 up/water down and has lost 6 pounds in 4 days. He is 6'4 and 186 lbs. This evening he finally held rice and finally is holding food this evening but his eyes are all puffy. We dont have medical insurance. I will take him to his ped. tomorrow but want to know your thoughts....he is not especially lethargic but sleeping alot. But he is still nauseous and is fighting vomiting with every bite. Side note: He has had a sensitive stomach for a long time. will throw up if he eats greasy foods in the past. I PUT HIM ON PROBIOTICS AND THAT SEEMED TO HELP A GREAT DEAL. BUT HE HAS NOT TAKEN THEM FOR ALMOST A YEAR. I am thinking Gall Bladder? Is there a simple blood test to determine if his gall bladder needs removed? Concerned Mom!

Brief Answer:
Acute gastritis

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thanks for the query

Gall bladder infection usually presents with fever and severe pain in the right upper abdomen and patients are very toxic.
What your son might be having is gastritis following a viral infection known as post viral syndrome. This is how you should go about it

1. Hydrate him well with ORS XXXXXXX 1 ORS XXXXXXX ( available in the pharmacy) should be mixed with 1 litre of water. It should be taken sip by sip.
2. Tab Omeprazole with domperidone is the ideal tablet for vomiting . It has to be taken once daily before food
3. Avoid milk and milk products
4. Avoid caffeine and aerated drinks
5. Keep the food bland
6. Let him take adequate rest but while sleeping make sure two pillows are there under the head

I hope I was of help, if you have any further queries please get back to me
