What Causes Nausea And Lower Abdominal Pain?

default
Posted on Tue, 20 Sep 2016
Question: I have been bed ridden all day feeling nauseous with severe abdominal cramping and pinching. Pain seems to be centered and not on one side. I've had similar issues before, once turned out to be an ectopic pregnancy, and a few were believed to be ruptured cysts some leaving me with fluid in my abdominal cavity and becoming infected. I feel horrible and I'm figuring if I go to the ER I'm just going to be in pain there instead of home. I think it might be a waste of time because they will just tell me it was another ruptured cyst and can't doing anything except for antibiotics and pain meds. (According to my charts, I should be ovulating right around this time). Why does this keep happening and what can I do?

Brief Answer:
Ovulation - Mittelschmerz

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for your query.

Yes, Nausea and spasmic lower abdominal pain are common symptoms encountered during Ovulation. This is called Mittelschmerz. The pain is similar to that of seen in ectopic pregnancy but of less intensity. Lasting only for a day or two.

If it lasts longer, possibility of a ruptured cyst should be considered.

Why does this keep happening. ?
-- None can tell. Formation of cysts cannot be predicted. Well, some have increased propensity to form cysts, the cause of which is unknown.

What can be done ?
-- Ovulation inhibitors. Oral contraceptive pills or hormonal implants can be of help here. Prevention can only be achieved by inhibiting the ovulation, only if you are not planning for pregnancy in coming days.

Hope, I answered your query.

Wish you good health.

Brief Answer:
Cyst rupture

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for the follow up.

I am sorry, I never said it will go away.

If the pain lasts longer them it could most probably be due to cyst rupture rather than regular ovulation.

Since the intensity of pain is high and stayed for long, I incline towards the fact that the cause is cyst rupture here.

Consult your gynecologist, who can place you on OCPs which can prevent such future recurrences.

Wish you good health.
