Posted on Tue, 3 Jun 2014
Question: Hi. My 5 month old baby has had mucus in his diaper that is an egg white consistency. I've been dairy/soy free for about 5 weeks. He strains when he's pooping but is not constipated.

Brief Answer:
Mucous discharge may be occasionally seen

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome to Healthcare-Magic
Greetings of the day

Occasionally babies do sometimes present with mucoid discharge from anus.
If the following criteria are fulfilled there is no cause for concern
1. No distension of abdomen
2. No excessive crying while passing stools
3. No redness in peri anal region
4. Anal fissure is ruled out.

I would also like some more additional information
1. What is the color of stools
2. Is he on breast feeding or formula feeding?
3. Is there redness around anal opening
4. Is he sleeping well after feeds
5. Are the stools foul smelling

The type of feeds the baby is on may also have bearing on the presentation.

Do get back to me with the details

Take care

He is EBF. He has always had a rash. I've eliminated dairy/soy now for about 5 weeks. He doesnt always cry when passing a stool but does have an occassionl crying spell & acts like he's in pain.
The first pic im attaching is from last night. He woke up crying & eventually pooped. Then this morning is when the egg white mucus was in his diaper which he grunted alot when trying to poop. He has lots of gas & I think it smells like a normal EBF baby poop maybe a little strngero
